- Author of dunmore Magic stories
This story is primarily a boys’ action adventure centred
around an interstellar rocket rescue.
The action and storyline are driven by the friendship, loyalty,
courage and imagination shared by the three main
characters, Finn, Jaunty and Peaky.
Finn damages one of his favourite toys, Peaky, in an over
zealous rocket launching experiment. He gets caught in a
storm while hiding in the garden from the repercussions. As a
result of becoming so cold and wet he falls ill, and during his
delirium is plunged into a fever dream. In the dream his two
favourite toys, Peaky the astronaut and Jaunty, a refuse truck
operator, become real people.
Peaky is lost in space because his rocket has been damaged
by a piece of space junk. In an effort to rescue him Finn and
Jaunty build their own rocket out of junk and rubbish on
Earth.
Embedded in the story are themes which, on the one hand
highlight the dangers posed by the man-made junk being
abandoned and dumped in space, while on the other,
celebrate Finn and Jaunty’s upcycling of Earth-based junk to
build their rescue rocket - The Space Junk Muncher.

The story of Finn and the Space Junk Muncher didn’t start out as a project to self-publish a book.
It was inspired by my 6 yrs old step-grandson who was very disappointed that he could not be
an astronaut and a rubbish collector when he grew up; he would have to choose.
That was the beginning of my journey to write this story and challenge the self-limiting beliefs
he was already holding about the possibilities available to him in the future.
My intention had been to write Finn and the Space Junk Muncher, bind it nicely and give it to
him for his birthday. However, when I showed his mum, just to check it was appropriate and the
sort of story he would enjoy, the ‘encouragement’ to self-publish snowballed.
Hence, Dunmore Magic Stories was born.
Ironic to think that in writing this story as encouragement for him not to limit the dreams of
what he can do in the future, it has in fact launched me, at the age of 66, into the world of
writing stories for children which I would never have thought possible.
